Did You Know?

Orcas are the largest species of Dolphin in the world.

Orca/Killer Whale

They have the reputation and hunting prowess to be given the name “killer”, swimming silently and swiftly through the sea, their powerful enough to overpower any creature in or near the ocean, but it is their intelligence and relpax hunting maneuvers that makes them nature’s most feared hunters. Orcas are common to be whales because of their size, but they’re actually the largest species of dolphin, they have been called “Killer Whales”, not because they’re whales but because they hunt and kill whales for food. 4 inches of blubber keeps them warm in the coldest Arctic waters, but Orcas live in oceans across the globe, growing up to 32 feet long and weighing up to 22,000 pounds (roughly the weight of 2 adult elephants), Orcas hunt meals of many of the ocean’s so called predators including sharks and leopard seals. Orcas have 56 razor sharp teeth, each five inches in length to feed an insatiable appetite that can consume 500 pounds of food per day although their possessive jaw, which is large enough to swallow seals and sea lions whole, Orcas prefer ripping prey into bite-size chunks, with jaws so powerful, one well-placed bite will normally lead a victim bleed to death. Swimming at speed up to 34 mph, their sleek aerodynamic design helps them shoot through the water like a torpedo while their 6ft long dorsal fin works like a keel on a sailboat, stabilized the Orca as it chases prey at high speeds. Even the Orca’s bold black and white coloring helps them hunt, Orcas swimming beneath prey will keep their black backs towards the victim so they disappeared into the dark depths of the ocean, if the attack is from above the prey, Orcas will show only their white underbelly blending in the sunlight coming through the water. This type of camouflage is called countershaded, another moniker they’re deservedly known by “Sea Wolves or Wolves of the Sea”, just like wolves hunting in packs, pods of up to 30 killer whales chase and surround their victims, when these Orcas work in tandem, they’re capable of capturing a 60ft Blue Whale, they encircle the giant beast biting it continuously until, bloody exhausting it finally drowns. Ocas also have a highly evolved sonar-like language which they use to organize complex killings, just like the navigation on a submarine, Killer Whale send out pings which bounce off other objects by the speed of the returning echo they’re able to locate their target, then the Orcas communicate that information to other members of the pod. Once the Killer Whales locate their victim, they have many ingenious ways to trap it, 1 trick is to surround a school of fish and blow massive amount of bubbles, creating a wall and corralling the fish into an uncomfortably small circle, then they take turns stunning the trapped fish with powerful slaps of their tails, it’s easy then to slurping an entire schools of days or dead fish. Because of their size, strength and exceptional intelligents, Orca can outwit any species either hunting alone or in groups, this intelligent predator continues to thrive the world’s oceans and earned its nickname “Killer Whale”.

Fun Fact
