Grizzly Bear

Did You Know?

Grizzly bears can stand up to 8 to 9 feet tall on its hind legs.

With broad shoulders, powerful forearms and bone shattering jaw strength, this predator is a definition of a sleeping giant, although gentle by nature, unsetting the grizzly bear awakens a fierce predator with a strength to kill whatever it pleases. Weighing up to 1200 pounds and standing 8 feet tall on its hindlegs, the grizzly bear is a tower of awesome strength, with a diet consisting primarily on berries, leaves, grass, and salmon, grizzly bear are not the natural carnivore that many seem to believe. Although sometimes eating young deer, elk or caribou, large kills like this happen right before the grizzly goes into hibernation, during this period known as hyperphagia, its craves appetite transforms this gentle giant into a roofless predator and with winter quickly approaching, the grizzly bear sets out its mission to sure it does not sleep hungry. With its height and sense of smell, the grizzly bear tracks down its prey, if the opportunity rises, the grizzly will scavenge and steal meals rather than kill usually by wolves, using size to its advantage, the bear will let the wolves know it is a force to be recent with, and with luck, the wolves will relinquish their meal. Yet the grizzly bear does not rely on stealing when searching for meat, one powerful swap with its forepaw is enough to bring any prey to the floor, the strength of a grizzly bear swap is equivalent to that of 5 men, if not already dead, the bear will use its powerful jaws to place the victim’s throat in a vice grip (suffocating it). Or if the prey is small enough, the bear will simply crush the skull with its jaws, surprisingly enough, most of the grizzly bear’s fearsome attributes are used for hunting capturing berries, its 4 inch long claws are proximately the length on the blade of a standard kitchen knife and their use primarily for picking berries from trees or digging holes in the ground. The grizzly bear’s muscular hump over its shoulders, powers the forelimbs as it overturns rocks searching for hidden treats, as docile this bear appears, it becomes extremely aggressive if it believes its cubs are in danger. Mothers are especially deadly charging up to 35 mph to get rid of potential threat. Lack of food also plays a large part in a grizzly’s aggressiveness the hungrier the bear, the bigger the reason to attack however, when grizzly bears are especially hungry, they feast on salmon during the salmon mating season, grizzlys will snatch up to 50 salmon in one day. Using their large paws, they’ll either swap a salmon onto shore or just use their jaws to eat salmon out of the water, but attacks on people are extremely rare with only 14 deaths being recorded in the U.S since the 1900. These mistakes occur when people get too close to a bear’s cubs or a bear believes a person’s hiding food from it, because of conservation efforts such as those at Yellowstone National Park and for the bears own desire to avoid humans, the grizzly bear population is rising. Surprisingly gentle, this sleeping giant can easily give the appearance of a teddy bear, but if provote and give a reason to attack, the grizzly bear will quickly prove why it’s one of the world’s most perfect predators.
